James Searby is a Senior Consultant with Osterwald Rathbone & Partners.

He specialises in the assessment of quantum issues in contentious matters, in both litigation in national courts and international arbitrations. James has worked in EMEA (i.e., Europe, the Middle East and Africa), as well as in the North America and Asia-Pacific regions.  His expertise encompasses a broad range of industries, for governments, companies and individuals, whether as claimants or respondents, on matters of up to US$150 billion in value.

James has a strong interest in the technical aspects of valuation, such as the appropriate treatment of beta calculations, country risks, marketability restrictions, trading block size and currency risks.

James has been appointed as an expert in international arbitrations in Europe, Asia Pacific and the Americas and in court proceedings in Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia.  He has testified before Courts and tribunals over 25 times since and has worked on over 100 expert matters.

In addition to his work with Osterwald Rathbone & Partners, James is also a Director and founder of Quantum Expertise Ltd, an Affiliate Partner at Osborne Partners (a London-based expert services firm) and a Director at Sapere Research Group, a Sydney-based expert services firm.  From 2012 to 2019, James was a Senior Managing Director at FTI Consulting, where he held positions leading the firm’s International Arbitration Practice in the Americas, preceded by the Asia Pacific region.

James has an MA in Modern History and Economics from the University of Oxford and an MBA from Imperial College, London.  He holds Charterholder status from the CFA Institute.  He is an Editor-in-Chief of Juris’s Journal for Damages in International Arbitration and has acted as an expert witness at training workshops organised by the Foundation for International Advocacy.
